The honorable Minister of Immigration, Marco E. L. Mendicino has recently announced the important details for the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Visa. The Parents and Grandparents (PGP) program has been opened in 2020. This has been announced by the government in order to reunite families.
This program will be valid for a period of 3 weeks, starting from 13th October 2020 till 3rd November 2020. All the permanent residents and Canadians wishing to sponsor their grandparents and parents can do so. Grandparents and parents can come to Canada by showing their interest by submitting a sponsor form online.
The eligibility criteria for the applicants are:
- The person applying for the program shall be Living in Canada
- The person shall have a Canadian citizenship or be a permanent resident
- Have enough finances to support his/her parents or grandparents while sponsoring them. The income that the person requires shall be CAD 32,899 for two people for 3 tax years before applying for the program. The amount increases as the number for people increase, around CAD 7,500 is added for an additional person.
- A proof of income will be required.
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship will select the potential sponsors randomly and send them an invitation in order to ensure transparency and fairness. After the selection of potential sponsors, they will have 60 days to submit their application for further process.
People who might have disabilities and who are unable to use the online platform will be accommodated. The selected sponsors can request for an alternative format by email. The IRCC understands that many sponsors would have faced financial difficulties during the spread of covid-19, due to which they have introduced a temporary public policy which includes reduction in income requirements for the year of 2020.
During these difficult times, the government understands the need for families to be together. The launch of this program in 2020 has built for new initiatives and priorities for the government. They have a target of approving around 49,000 family sponsorship application by the end of 2020.
In the year of 2020 around 10,000 applications will be accepted followed by 30,000 in 2021.
